Pick-Up & Drop-Off Info

We do offer convenient pick-up and drop-off options for all lessons. However, please note that travel time counts toward your total lesson hours. Most students prefer to meet and finish at the road test location — this allows for the most efficient, focused use of your session. Even a short 10-minute warm-up can lead to meaningful improvement, and our instructors make sure every minute is used effectively.

Who this applies to

Newcomers & International Drivers: How to Get Your Full Driver’s License in British Columbia

Important: If you’ve held your Class 7N / Class 5N in Metro Vancouver with a clean record for 24 months (or 18 months with an ICBC-approved driver training course), you can automatically upgrade to Class 5 without a second road test. This does not apply to licences issued outside Canada.
1 What You Need to Apply

Identification

  • Valid passport
  • Valid immigration document (work permit or study permit)

Proof of Residency in B.C.

  • Utility bill, rental agreement, bank statement, or official government mail

Foreign Driver’s Licence

  • Bring your current valid licence from your home country
  • If not in English or French, include a certified translation

Proof of Driving Experience

To move directly to a full Class 5, you must show 2+ years of licensed driving.

Acceptable documents include:

  • Official driving records
  • Licensing history letter from your licensing authority
2 Steps to Get Your Full B.C. Licence
  1. Gather your documents — passport, immigration document, proof of residency, foreign licence, and driving-experience record.
  2. Visit ICBC & surrender your foreign licence — ICBC will keep your original while you complete the process.
  3. Take the knowledge test — pass the written exam on B.C. road rules and signs.
  4. Practice driving in B.C. — ICBC recommends ~60 hours to adapt to local road culture, traffic, and speed control.
  5. Book & complete your road test — after passing knowledge + practice, take the Class 5 road test to obtain your full licence.

ICBC standards you must meet

To take your ICBC road test, you’ll need to bring two pieces of valid identification along with your licence (L or N, as applicable).

During the test, you’ll be evaluated on your observation routine (mirror, signal, shoulder check), right-of-way judgment, speed control, hazard scanning, spacing, and parking maneuvers.

The goal is to demonstrate smooth, confident control under real traffic conditions.

Questions About Newcomer Road Test Prep

How does the Newcomer Road Test Prep course work?

The full program includes 10 hours of in-car lessons, usually completed as five 2-hour sessions. Each lesson focuses on B.C. driving rules, local road habits, and ICBC test standards.

Who can take this course?

Designed for new immigrants and international drivers with at least 2 years of active driving experience in their home country who want to confidently pass the ICBC Class 5 or 7 road test.

Can I use my own car for lessons or the ICBC test?

Yes. You can use your own insured, roadworthy vehicle, or book a school vehicle through our Road Test Vehicle Booking service for added convenience.

What if I’m not familiar with B.C. driving laws or signs?

That’s exactly what we cover. We’ll teach you ICBC road rules, signage, and local traffic expectations so you adapt quickly and avoid common test mistakes.

Is this course recognized by ICBC?

Yes — DriveTreck Academy is an ICBC-approved training school. Completing this program ensures you train to B.C. driving and road-safety standards.

Payment for the test fee.

Test fee (ICBC):

  • Class 5 Road Test: $50
  • All road tests are free for seniors (65+)

Licensing fees (after you pass):

  • New 5-year licence typically $75 (issued by ICBC)

Total potential cost (example):

  • Class 5: $125 ($50 test + $75 licensing)

Note: a $25 cancellation fee applies if you don’t cancel a booked road test at least 48 hours in advance (ICBC fee, not our school).

Failed attempts: how long before I can retake?
  • After the first attempt: wait 14 days
  • After the second attempt: wait 30 days
  • After the third and subsequent attempts: wait 60 days
Why should I take the course with DriveTreck Driving Academy instead of another school?

For newcomers, driving in B.C. is part of settling into daily life. Distances are long and transit may not always fit work, school, or family needs. Safe driving gives you freedom, stability, and confidence.

We understand the challenges many newcomers face — especially parents balancing work, childcare, and a new environment. Our program helps you adapt quickly so you can rebuild your routine and access opportunities.

We specialize in helping international learners adjust to:

  • Different road rules and traffic laws
  • Faster driving speeds (vs. many Asian/EU countries)
  • Larger roads and more complex intersections
  • Higher safety expectations and enforcement standards

Our instructors teach in a clear, patient, culturally aware way so you can learn without stress.

I have more than 2 years of driving experience. How many classes do I need?

Even experienced drivers need time to adjust to B.C. rules, intersection patterns, and faster speeds. For example, many left turns here are unprotected on a green light — you must judge oncoming traffic, watch pedestrians, monitor the signal, and choose a safe gap.

We recommend starting with a 5-lesson package. In the first 3–5 minutes we’ll assess your habits against ICBC standards and provide a personalized training plan so you only take what you need.

I just arrived and don’t have a car. Can I rent a vehicle from your school for my road test?

We only provide vehicles for road tests to students who trained with us and have been assessed as road-test ready. New students should take lessons first so we can evaluate skills and ensure safety.

For students who completed our mock exam and meet standards, we offer test-day vehicle rental with a 2-hour warm-up before your exam.

What should I study or do to prepare before lessons?

Review the ICBC Learn to Drive Smart guide and practice hazard scanning, mirror checks, and smooth speed control. Bring your licence, valid insurance, and any questions — we’ll do the rest.
