November 14, 2025Class 4 Restricted vs Unrestricted in BC
A Simple Breakdown of What You Need
If you are planning to drive for work in BC, you have probably already run into these two terms: Class 4 Restricted and Class 4 Unrestricted. The names sound similar but the differences matter. They determine what you can drive, what jobs you qualify for, and what type of training you need.
This guide gives you a clean explanation of both licence types so you can choose the right path without guesswork.
The Purpose of a Class 4 Licence
Class 4 is the licence category for professional drivers who transport people or operate certain commercial vehicles. It is the licence behind most paid driving roles where safety and responsibility matter.
A Class 4 licence confirms that you can:
- Manage a vehicle safely
- Handle passengers
- Follow commercial driving rules
- Respond to emergencies
- Drive professionally rather than just personally
Both versions of Class 4 have the same goal but apply to different vehicle types.
What Class 4 Restricted Allows You to Drive
Class 4 Restricted is designed for smaller commercial vehicles that allows a driver to transport up to 10 people (including the driver).
With Class 4 Restricted, you can drive:
- Taxis
- Ride hailing vehicles such as Uber or Lyft
- Emergency vehicles under specific weight limits
- Small passenger vehicles with up to ten seats
- Small scale commercial transport where the vehicle is not large or heavy
This is the licence most drivers choose when they want to:
- Drive Uber or Lyft
- Work as a taxi driver
- Start a small transportation service
- Use their own car for commercial purposes
Class 4 Restricted is more common than Unrestricted because it covers most modern gig and taxi driving.
What Class 4 Unrestricted Allows You to Drive
Class 4 Unrestricted is the commercial licence that allows a driver to transport up to a maximum of 25 people (including the driver).
With Class 4 Unrestricted, you can drive:
- Shuttles
- Mini buses
- Ambulances
- Certain local transit vehicles
- Passenger vans with more than ten seats
This licence type is required for roles that involve transporting groups or operating a vehicle that is larger or more complex.
Who Needs Which Licence
Here is an easy way to decide.
Choose Class 4 Restricted if you want to drive:
- Uber or Lyft
- Taxi
- Small passenger vehicle
- Your own car for commercial use
- Vehicles with ten seats or fewer
Choose Class 4 Unrestricted if you want to drive:
- Shuttle buses
- Passenger vans
- Multi seat transport vehicles
- Small medical transport
- Ambulances
If a vehicle has more than 10 seating positions (including the driver), or is at a 9 feet wide, a Class 4 Unrestricted licence is required.
Quick clarification (important for teaching):
If the vehicle feels like a regular car or SUV, you likely only need Restricted.
Training Path and Testing Differences
Both licences require:
- A knowledge test
- A road test
- A medical form
The difference comes down to two things: the vehicle you test in and the skills examiners evaluate.
Class 4 Restricted test:
You use a regular car or similar vehicle. The focus is on high level safety, observation, passenger responsibility, and overall judgment.
Class 4 Unrestricted test:
You must use a larger vehicle such as a passenger van or shuttle. The test includes more complex handling, wider turns, speed management in a heavier vehicle, and stronger overall vehicle control.
Rent a car for Class 4 Unrestricted:
Students will be required to rent a vehicle for the Class 4 Unrestricted road test, and based on our experience, renting from U-Haul (9 feet) is the most cost-effective option than renting from us. TTheir vehicles meet Insurance Corporation of British Columbia standards, and examiners are familiar with them, helping to avoid any unnecessary confusion during the road test.
Cost, Time, and What to Expect
Class 4 preparation usually takes less time than GLP training because students already have driving experience.
Expect:
- One knowledge test at ICBC
- A medical examination
- A pre trip inspection routine to learn
- Commercial driving rules to review
- A road test booking
- A training period that ranges from a few hours to several sessions
At DriveTreck, both Class 4 programs are structured so you can learn the routine, master the inspection, and build the habits examiners expect.
Common Mistakes When Choosing Between Restricted and Unrestricted
Here are the patterns we see with new commercial drivers:
- Choosing a Restricted licence because they believe the Unrestricted licence is more difficult to learn and control.
- Trying to learn the pre trip inspection the day before
- Assuming the test is the same as Class 5
- Underestimating the ccomplexity of commercial driving
- Not practicing in a vehicle similar to the one used in the test
- Booking the test without any professional training
Most of these mistakes come from confusion rather than lack of skill. The rules are simple once someone explains them clearly.

Quick FAQ
Can I upgrade from Restricted to Unrestricted later?
Yes. Many drivers start with Restricted and upgrade only if their job requires it. DriveTreck recommends going straight for the Unrestricted licence to avoid wasting time, money, and energy, as the knowledge test, road test, and learning plan are essentially the same.

Most students take a minium of three lessons with us depending on experience and licence type.
